A Sizzling Friday Night in June…

The weather's heating up...people are getting ready to shed more clothes. People are looking for a good time. The first Friday in June promises to be a scorcher at Southpaw. Eli Paperboy Reed and The True Loves come to town. For those of you who were not part of the 500 strong that came out to Brooklyn Bowl on snow January night...u gotta see this show! This time around Eli has Brooklyn's own Lily and The Parlour Tricks to warm yallz up...this one's gonna be shamokin!!!! BUY TICKETS HERE! Never seen Eli? Check out what the experts say...um...think he's got the goods, or WHAT? "Mr. Reed invokes the stylish and muscular R&B of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke with convincing suavity." - THE NEW YORK TIMES "A whole-hearted son of soul ... Amy Winehouse better watch her back." - THE VILLAGE VOICE "Serious swagger and old-school sincerity ... a local favorite set to break out on a national level." - THE BOSTON GLOBE "There are singers who sing and there are singers whose sheer power of expression can knock you off your feet. Eli 'Paperboy' Reed falls firmly into the latter category ... [he] threatens to be one of the defining voices of the year" - MOJO MAGAZINE "[A] star on the rise ... Reed stunned the crowd [as he] screeched and hollered through a no-holds-barred set of originals that could be easily mistaken for lost Stax classics." - THE BOSTON HERALD "The truth is in the grooves ... [Reed's song 'The Satisfier'] is the sound that's bulldozed the skeptics - dirty guitar, in-the-pocket rhythm section, goosy organ, rocking call-and-response horns, and backing vocals that out-Ronson Mark Ronson." - THE BOSTON PHOENIX "[Reed's] blazing soul get[s] the pulse racing and the spirit testifying. The brilliantly nicknamed singer combines the sob of Al Green with the beef of Otis Redding, and boasts a band, The True Loves, who look young enough to be in some emo group but have better taste." - MOJO MAGAZINE "A belting singer....A call to party like it's 1969." - THE TIMES OF LONDON "[Reed] is strong and confident...he delivers a classic soul boast without sounding churlish or macho..." - NO DEPRESSION "A voice to rival the greats." - THE WORD MAGAZINE "The audience was fully swept up in the soul wayback machine [Reed] and his band constructed ... one look at Reed wailing his guts out and it was clear he meant every note." - BILLBOARD "If you do only do one thing this week, [go see] Eli 'Paperboy' Reed ... The talented singer is clearly screaming from the heart." - TIME OUT NY "Stirs up rafter-raising Gospel spirit with down-home dirt and spit." - RECORD COLLECTOR "If I had to choose a new song I loved, I'd pick 'Take My Love With You' by this guy from Boston, Eli 'Paperboy' Reed." - NICK LOWE talking to MOJO MAGAZINE CHECK OUT PASTE MAGAZINE ARTICLE ON LILY AND THE PARLOUR TRICKS HERE LILY AND THE PARLOUR TRICKS

Dig Deeper Presents LEE FIELDS w/ The Sweet Divines Sat May 21!!!

In NYC, Lee is one of the better-known legends of soul and funk we have had the pleasure of working with – but…do you really know Lee Fields? Did you know… * that Lee Fields was one of the original vocalists for Kool & the Gang? * that some of his first recordings were done with Dig Deeper alum Lenis Guess? * that prior to recording at Daptone / Desco, he put records out on 15 different labels? * that his vocals have been on hit house records in France? Don’t feel bad, we didn’t know any of that either when we first met Lee. Ever since Lee’s first show at Dig Deeper in 2008, we have searched high and low for recordings of his that people hadn’t heard. This one – “We fought for survival” on Festival Records, was thought never to have been released, and was un-googlable until we put it up on youtube for you to enjoy: How could a Lee Fields song that good be unknown? Not for much longer – Lee will be performing this song for the first time in decades on May 21 at Dig Deeper. At this very special show, Lee will be performing songs from across his career, digging deep into his catalog – aching ballads, blazing funk, and yes, the Sweet Divines & the Divine Soul Rhythm Band will in fact be re-arranging not one, but two of Lee’s French house hits the way they would have been done back in the day. Don’t think they can do it? They tore the roof off last time, in 2008: At this show, Lee will be backed by the Sweet Divines, who will also be opening the night with their own set. As you know, any night with Lee Fields is a party - and this is one party you will definitely not want to miss!

ZUZKA PODEROSA added to Bomba Estereo show at Southpaw!!

PODEROSA means POWER!!!! "Not only is she bringing her own brand of the hot Brazilian underground sound to the rest of the world, but from her international vantage point she operates like a provocatively rhyming hurricane, sucking up global riddims from ghettotech to dancehall and flinging them back out at gale-force speeds." - MTV Zuzuka Poderosa is the new queen warrior of her own special brand of baile funk. Funk carioca, which originates from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and borrowed heavily from Miami bass, is just the starting place of her sound. Born in Victoria, Brazil, Zuzuka grew up in Rio, with her formative years spent in the West Indies. She later moved to Brooklyn, NYC to study jazz vocal improvisation and work at her poetry. For the past few years, she's been building up the underground baile funk scene in New York as a DJ, host and bartender. Currently working on her debut EP, she collaborates with producers from all over the world who mix the past with the future in sur americal-cosmic new ways. She raps and sings in Portuguese, Spanish and English, musing provocatively and sarcastically over boomy electric kick drums or Latin percussions (or both at the same time!) She makes Carioca Bass music. 'Interracial musical babies' all her own. Her sound is fierce and fun, conjuring images of hot summer dance parties on gritty Brooklyn rooftops or up in the hills overlooking the sea. ZUZUKA PODEROSA performs Sunday, May 8@Southpaw w/ Navegante and Bomba Estereo. Buy tickets HERE
