Opening up is a real treat, someone we’ve been trying to get close to for over a year now, and up from Brisbane, Australia comes VIOLENT SOHO. We heard “Jesus Stole My Girlfriend”, in all it’s Kobain-like glory and Gil Norton-styled nob twistin’.

Southpaw is extremely proud to host underground punk heroes Alice Donut on Thursday, November 4th. The band will be playing tracks from it’s new release Ten Glorious Animals (see reviews below), as well as some of their great ditties from their previous seven studio albums. The band will also film this show for future DVD release. The only other show scheduled for the band this year will be Saturdays show at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

Alice Donut formed in the punk underground of New York City’s Lower East Side in 1987, eventually releasing six studio albums and one live LP (recorded at CBGB’s). Jello Biafra initially encouraged the group and signed them to his Alternative Tentacles label, where Alice Donut released all of their albums. The band’s punk style was occasionally leavened with elements of oddball country and funk. (AMG)

The band’s style and lyrics are eclectic. Their music is a mixture of hard rock, punk, and post-punk and typically features melodic, guitar-heavy, odd-metered, and rhythm based pieces and is often punctuated with brass instrumentation. Many of the members are traditionally- or classically-trained musicians, though rarely on the same instruments they play in the band. Alice Donut’s lyrics take on what they view as the perversities, odd details, and petty humiliations of life. Their lyrical subject matter focuses on topics including depravity, domestic violence, and sexuality, reflected in songs like “My Life is a Mediocre Piece of Shit” and “The Son Of A Disgruntled X-Postal Worker Reflects On His Life While Getting Stoned In The Parking Lot Of A Winn Dixie Listening To Metallica”. REVIEWS FROM TEN GLORIOUS ANIMALS:

Alice Donut was a band that rode beneath my radar back in the day; I was always aware of them, and had heard them, but never really listened to them. Now with the release of Ten Glorious Animals, I am planning on remedying this, and thinking about looking back at was I missed. – Ryan Cooper, About.com

“A penchant for penning melodic tunes that stick in your brain like a stainless steel scalpel knife.” – AMG

TONY Digs Deeper…

Fresh off their successful Brooklyn Soul Festival, the dusty-fingered record freaks Mr. Robinson and DJ Honky are back with their night devoted to vintage funk and soul. This month’s edition features another in the party’s string of fabled R&B performers, bringing in the four surviving members of the Green Berets, a Chicago soul group that also went by the name Walter & the Admirations. The group’s records are Holy Grails for the Northern Soul scene; this will be its first performance in more than 20 years, and first ever in Gotham. The Sweet Divines and the Divine Soul Rhythm Band open up (the latter combo also serves as the Berets’ backing band for the night).

Slammin’ shows in November pt.1

THE DEVIL MAKES THREE bring their funkybilly trio to Southpaw for the first time after a packed, roof raising show at Public Assembly back in June. THE DEVIL MAKES THREE play on November 8 with Hymns, Spirit Family Reunion and Spitzer Space Telescope.

Check the kind words the press has to say below, but first, check this out.:

Max Goldberg – flavorpill.com.
Like the Violent Femmes before them, Santa Cruz’s the Devil Makes Three infuse their country-bluegrass swing with a raucous punk spirit. A popular group on the festival circuit, the trio spins its odes to Tennessee whiskey and brawling with acoustic guitar, banjo, and stand-up bass — an economical set-up that makes for some surprisingly danceable music. Lead singer Pete Bernhard’s voice is a little rough around the edges, but the group’s harmonies go down smooth. Too restless to play the typical bluegrass venues and too musically sophisticated for your average bar band, Devil Makes Three are a rare breed: wild traditionalists.

UCSF Synapse – Arul Thangavel
Another find was Devil Makes Three, who played before Built To Spill, a band that can only be described as party country music – two guitars and a stand up bass relived whiskey-fueled mayhem of yore with a rhythm that begs a dance.

Shotgunreviews.com:
…the Devil Makes Three bring a D.I.Y. aesthetic to ragtime, bluegrass, and classic folk music. Like the Violent Femmes, the Devil Makes Three can rock out with acoustic instruments yet remain engagingly melodic. Their slightly punky perspective on vintage Americana provides an irreverent tone, but there’s no denying the affection this group has for its ’20s and ‘30 inspirations.
