SOUTHPAW to host evening with Music Journalists
On Tuesday, November 23, Southpaw is proud to host an evening with some of the most respected music journalists today. Each writer will read and speak on their work in Ann Powers new book, BEST MUSIC 2010.
Doors@7pm and the event is FREE! There will be a Q+A as well.
Participating in the evening are:
Guest Editor Ann Powers is the chief pop critic of the Los Angeles Times, the author of Weird Like Us: My Bohemian America, and, with the artist, Tori Amos: Piece By Piece. She also co-edited the pioneering anthology Rock She Wrote: Women Write About Rock, Rap, and Pop.
Series Editor Daphne Carr, the author of Pretty Hate Machine, is a music journalist. She lives in Manhattan and can be found on the Web at funboring.com.
Nitsuh Abebe lives in New York and writes fiction and criticism. He is a music critic for New York Magazine and has a monthly column at Pitchfork.com, titled “Why We Fight.
Jon Caramanica writes about music and other things for The New York Times.
Jason Fine is the executive editor of Rolling Stone magazine. He’s edited books on George Harrison, Johnny Cash and Michael Jackson. Currently he’s writing an authorized biography of Brian Wilson. He was born and raised in southern Californian and lives in Brooklyn and Woodstock, New York.
Maura Johnston has written about music and culture for The Awl, the Village Voice, the Daily Beast, and gawker. She is a commentator on NPR and was one of the founding editors of Idolator. She lives in New York.
Evie Nagy is an associate editor at Billboard Magazine and writes about music, culture, and comic books for a variety of publications. A former university administrator and speechwriter, she also co-wrote the afterword for an upcoming anthology of the late Ellen Willis’s rock writing. She lives in New York.
Tavia Nyong’o writes and teaches about performance and popular music from his perch at New York University. He is working on a book about the intersection of punk and queer.
Christopher R. Weingarten is a freelance music critic living Brooklyn whose work regularly appears in The Village Voice, RollingStone.com, Revolver, Spin and more. He is the author of It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (Continuum) and the upcoming Hipster Puppies (NAL/Penguin).
