DJ Honky & Mr. Robinson present: Dig Deeper @ Southpaw with the Black Hollies and Dean Parrish backed by the Solid Set!

We are incredibly excited to welcome our friend Dean Parrish back to the stage at Dig Deeper – he was the fourth artist we’d booked, way back in September 2008. That’s only 2 years ago…but that was his first show in his NYC hometown in 40 years. This will be his second.

The soul singles that Dean recorded from 1964 – 1967 (including a poundingly uptempo version of “Tell Her”, “Determination”, “Bricks, Broken Bottles and Sticks”, and many others) became very popular spins on the Northern Soul scene in the UK in the mid-1970s, and his 1967 release on Laurie “I’m on my way” was even the very last record ever played at the legendary Wigan Casino club – and sold over a million copies outside the US. Completely unaware of his fame overseas, Dean had reverted to his given name, Philip Anastasia, and continued to work as a session guitar player for artists like Bob Marley, Santana, and Jimi Hendrix.

For years, his identity was unknown, and he was assumed to be a black singer from Detroit or Chicago. It wasn’t until 2001 when UK DJ Andy Rix tracked him down to Staten Island that this Italian American artist became aware of his overseas fanbase – subsequently, he has toured several times through the UK and Europe to significant acclaim. More recently, he has also recorded a contemporary single, “Left, Right and Centre” written by Paul Weller, and has appeared in several acting roles, most notably as an emcee in the wedding episode of Season 6 of the Sopranos.

Since his rediscovery, Dean has performed to crowds of over 1,000 in Europe – to see him in such a small venue as Southpaw should be nothing short of astounding. At his last Dig Deeper appearance, grown women cried – no joke. The man is a powerhouse. We cannot wait.

Dean will be backed by the mighty Solid Set whom you’ve seen recently backing Bobby Patterson and Barbara Stant at Dig Deeper.

Opening the night will be our friends the Black Hollies. Yes, technically not a traditional soul band – but then there isn’t a soul band alive that can keep up with the likes of Dean Parrish. A blast of garage with a dash of psychedelia – while keeping it soulful – never hurt anyone, right?

MT. OLYMPUS

Mount Olympus exploded through the crust of the earth when Mike Guggino arrived in New York City, fresh faced from Philadelphia, and met Carter Logan of Bad Rabbit. Mike’s band, Barking Spiders, was breaking up and he wanted to start something heavy and new. Their immediate demands? Create a face melting, rippingly awesome guitar rock band with it’s own special brand of sassafrass sauce. After uniting with the long golden-locked Dickie Spectacular, all they lacked was a badass, hard thumping, smooth and handsome bass player. The gods answered their prayers in the form of Sharif Hassan of The Yakima Nation. Fully straight frocked from recording their debut record they hope to conquer the known universe with their brand of nasty epic punk stoner boogie metal. Iron maiden, Thin Lizzy, Rocket From The Crypt and Led Zeppelin are some of the comparisons being thrown about, but only by blessing your ears with the hulking sexy crushing sound of Mount Olympus will you truly be able to pass justifiable justice on them.

MANERVA LIONS

Minerva Lions are made up of Jared, Tim, Joe, Grey, Thom and sometimes Ezra. they love to play music together. they love to play music for you. the music is dreamy and unclean. though they have recently finished the basics for their debut EP there are no leaks of it yet so you will have to come see them live if you’d like to know more. that is not a ploy or a trick. it’s just the truth. their logo is sometimes stolen from a marching band jacket and it looks like a werewolf and a cabbage had a baby together. they hope to see you soon. goodbike.
