We are very excited to announce that we will be bringing Bobby Patterson up from Dallas, Texas for the May edition of Dig Deeper, this time backed by the Solid Set!
Texas soul legend Bobby Patterson’s career in music started the day he picked up an old busted-up guitar with four strings that his aunt left for him after she passed away. At the young age of 12, he and his first band the Royal Rockers regularly destroyed all competition at school talent shows – and ultimately won the opportunity to record a single with Liberty Records in California.
By age 16, he found himself playing guitar for Ike & Tina Turner when they came to Dallas – “Ike was so jealous; they said, don’t look at Tina’s behind whatever you do. So of course that’s the first thing I did, I looked at Tina’s behind.” Coincidentally (or not) it was around this time that Bobby stopped backing other artists and embarked on his own solo career in earnest.
As was too often the norm, small local labels like Future, Abnak, and Jetstar (an imprint created specifically for Bobby when Abnak’s owner realized his talent) lacked any semblance of promotion, and it was only the raw power and quality of Bobby’s recorded work that ultimately carried it outside of the region, finally hitting the Billboard charts with the stormingly uptempo funky “T.C.B. or T.Y.A.”
Over the years, Bobby has been involved in every end of the music business from producing and writing songs for an incredible roster of artists including Chuck Jackson, Fontella Bass, and Roscoe Robinson, to promoting, to DJ’ing on the radio in his hometown of Dallas – which he still does to this day.
It has been several years since Bobby Patterson has graced the stages of NYC – any time passed is too long to wait to hear him deliver aching southern soul ballads like “Let them talk” or “Long Ago”, or tear up a dancefloor with some of his powerhouse classics like “Busy Busy Bee” or “My thing is your thing”, which always seem to be in the front of a smart soul DJ’s playbox.
Bobby Patterson will be backed by the Solid Set (whom you’ve seen back Don Gardner, Obie “Young” Jessie, Dean Parrish, and Lenis Guess at Dig Deeper)!
Opening set by Select Blendz, a group soul vocal quintet whose members have backed Andre Williams, among others.
