Wow. These shows just get better and better. Now in it’s fourth month, the DIG DEEPER series returns to Southpaw on February 27. It’s like when I try to explain to folks what our other monthlies, THE RUB, and HOT JAMZ, I tell them the obvious in that, my best explanation of the night could not even come close to describing the fun one has by actually being there. The performances from each month’s headliner and the lovely and amazing opening sets each month from The Sweet Divines are enough alone to make you want to come to this each month. The programming by DJ Honky and Mr. Robinson DIG DEEPER is spot on. And when you throw in the dance party that follows these shows, you have the prefect recipe for a great Saturday night in Brooklyn every month!

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us on January 23 for Darrow Fletcher’s triumphant return to the NYC stage after a staggering 43 year absence. It’s like he was never gone. The Sweet Divines and the Divine Soul Rhythm Band blazed behind him, and did one of the best sets of their own that we’ve seen. As always, we have several live recordings posted on our myspace page:

On to February 27! We are incredibly excited to have New Orleans soul legend Tami Lynn return to Dig Deeper for an encore performance since her last show with us in July of 2008, which was actually our second ever show. There was serious voodoo in the air then – you definitely won’t want to miss her this time!

Tami Lynn started singing gospel as a teenager in the early 1960s in New Orleans. After sneaking out of the house to hear John Coltrane when her parents weren’t looking (a story she told me at the last show), she began singing jazz with Harold Battiste and the AFO Executives, and recorded a full LP with them which contains one of the earliest – and fieriest – versions of the Crescent City classic track “Mojo Hannah”. At age 16, she opened for Coltrane at Birdland here in NYC.

The biggest selling single of her own material, “I’m gonna run away from you” was sadly not a success here in the USA, but became a huge record in the UK on the northern soul scene when it was re-released overseas. Back here at home, she sang backing vocals for Dr. John and a band called the Rolling Stones on their Exile on Main Street album, among many others.

She is an incredible performer and storyteller, and we are so lucky to have her joining us again at Dig Deeper. Look forward to seeing you there!
