A great addition to the bill on Sunday, November 8 with The Devil Makes Three, Hymns and Spitzer Space Telescope. I find it fascinating that Spirit Family Reunion has only been playing together for about a year. They sound like they have been on a back porch for years o a steady diet of The Carter Family and a stack of other great hillbilly music that seems comforting to hear in New York. Brooklyn really needs to be recognized, especially South Brooklyn, for being the biggest supporter of roots flavor in all of New York. Although the band has some members that live outside the borough, the roots for Spirit Family Reunion seem like they could be planted here in Brooklyn to our ears. I promise, these guys will knock you out. Now get down ya’ll.
SPITZER SPACE TELESCOPE
Spitzer Space Telescope is Dan McDonald. I got turned on to SST last year and have been pretty intrigued about the idea of such a young man whose style reflects a way of singing and songwriting that hasn’t been explored this way in a while to my ears. It made me go back and check out some of those Clancy Brothers tunes that used to play quite frequently back in the mid to late 90′s on the jukebox at the late, great Mooney’s Pub back in the day. SST’s tunes remind me of the honest feeling of their music. SST’s passionate stories, told in his unique style, will certainly find it’s ways to many more wanton ears in the months and years to come. In a way, he also brings to mind the recently, and sadly departed Jeff Hanson, in terms of male performers doing things with their voices that our ears aren’t used to hearing in abundance. We are all really looking forward to his Southpaw debut.
